New Year’s Eve is the most important family holiday for us, but for the Czechs this function is successfully performed by Christmas. And here’s what the Czechs do on New Year’s Eve, we’ll tell you in today’s article.

To begin with, the most magical night of the year in the Czech Republic is called Silvestr, and it is customary to celebrate it in style! This is not an ordinary family get-together, but a great excuse to really have fun in a large and noisy company of friends, acquaintances and people who may become friends and acquaintances after the New Year’s Eve. Czechs try to leave the city to leave the capital to the tourists who come to Prague in huge numbers. It is worth saying that Prague in the New Year’s Eve looks just extraordinary! All the main architectural monuments are decorated with light bulbs, bells ring around the city and musicians play live Christmas music, and on the Old Town Square they decorate a huge holiday tree.

Students usually go home for New Year’s Eve, but those who stay know that they would not be bored, because Prague is a perfect city to celebrate the New Year! Almost all institutions organize parties with entertainment program, so you can make a wish with Bengal lights under the main Christmas tree or on the Charles Bridge and then go to a party. And although the snow in winter in Prague is a rare phenomenon, the Czech Republic is a warm enough country, the weather will not disappoint you! Light frost and clear skies, sunshine and dry streets perfectly complement the bright light installations that the capital of the Czech Republic is dressed up in on New Year’s Eve.

Christmas in Prague /christmas-in-prague/ Thu, 23 Dec 2021 08:04:01 +0000 /?p=15404

Christmas is perhaps the most important family holiday of the year for Czechs. With the same enthusiasm and scale with which we celebrate the New Year, Czechs celebrate Christmas with their parents and friends at a large table and all kinds of treats. Christmas in Czech is called Vánoce.

Decorations around the city begin to hang from mid-November – Czechs are impatient people in this regard, they want to feel the spirit of Christmas as early as possible! And this is quite understandable, because November itself is not a very colorful month, and with Christmas decorations Prague looks like a real magical country. From the end of November to the beginning of December, Christmas fairs begin to appear in the city, where you can buy beautiful Christmas tree decorations, various handicrafts and, of course, national Czech dishes – svarzak (hot wine with spices), baked potatoes with pork rinds, trdelnik and the famous dumplings withgravy. The citizens of Prague love Christmas markets and always come to them with the whole family to plunge into the atmosphere of the holiday to the fullest!

As we noted above, Christmas is traditionally a home holiday, and celebrating it involves a large number of dishes on the table, gifts under the tree, watching your favorite Czech films (such as Three Nuts for Cinderella, for example). Since Christmas in the Czech Republic is celebrated more splendidly than New Year, the tree disappears here much earlier, and by January 6, the tree is usually disposed of. It should be noted that the life span of the most festive tree in the world in the Czech Republic is not too long.

On the table, Czechs usually put baked carp and brambor salad, which is very reminiscent of our Olivie, and, of course, various types of meat, because as you know, the Czechs are a nation that cannot imagine their life without meat! In general, we can safely say that Christmas for Czechs is the most important holiday of the year and if you manage to attend a real Christmas family evening, you will get a truly unforgettable experience.

Karlovy Vary msmstudy.eu

On June 27, 2020, MSM Foundation Programs students went on their first journey after the lifting of quarantine in the Czech Republic. This time they had a trip to Karlovy Vary – the most famous Czech spa town. In just 2 hours, a comfortable bus took our students, accompanied by an experienced guide, a professional photographer, and caring coordinators from Prague to the destination.

The founding father of the city is the Czech king Charles IV. According to the legend, the king saw a young deer while hunting in these areas. He ordered to let the dogs down but the deer ran away from the riders and, finding himself on the edge of the cliff, jumped into the gorge with thick steam and disappeared. When the king and his retinue went down looking for a deer, they found a fountain with hot water, which gushed from the very ground. The king washed himself in the spring and felt its healing power: his leg stopped hurting. Immediately after this Charles IV built a village around the source – modern Karlovy Vary.

Our trip to Karlovy Vary was filled not only with fascinating legends but also with a practical acquaintance of students with the healing springs of the city. In total, there are 12 thermal springs and one geyser in Karlovy Vary. The guide showed the students the most popular of them. Karlovy Vary is also famous for its film festival and delicious waffles – oplatky.

So, our trip to Karlovy Vary was interesting and exciting, the students looked at the new city, and were filling with new strength waiting for this autumn when they will have their first year as students of a Czech university!

On June 23, 2020, students of the International Union of Youth went on an exciting excursion to the Prague Zoo. According to the old tradition, students were accompanied by our responsible coordinators and an MSM photographer.

In the ranking of Forbes Traveler magazine, Prague Zoo took the honorable 7th place among the best zoos in the world. More than 4804 animals from 696 different species live on its territory. Our students walked through the open and closed pavilions of the zoo, admired funny penguins, graceful panthers and tigers, and even got acquainted with huge gorillas. A real tropical jungle was waiting for them in the Indonesian pavilion, as well as on the territory of the zoo one could eat in the cafes located here, as well as buy delicious snaks in various kiosks. The Prague Zoo is also famous for its cable car that connects its two territories.

In general, our excursion went well: the students of the foundation programs had an interesting time under the warm summer sun, rested after an eventful year and gained new impressions. We wish each of them good luck in the new academic year because all of them have already successfully passed the entrance exams and have become students of their chosen universities in the Czech Republic. We still have a few excursions ahead, but the educational process at MSM is over. We will miss our students and we are looking forward to welcoming them to our office in Prague!

mysterious Prague msmstudy.eu

Prague is a fabulous place that contains many interesting sights and mysterious stories. Students of the semi-annual MSM courses on February 2, 2020, together with a guide, visited the most interesting places in mysterious Prague.

We are pleased to show our students beautiful Prague, it is included in the list of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is no coincidence that the Czech government takes care of preserving its historical heritage. For example, there is such a law that prohibits the installation of satellite dishes on the facades and roofs of buildings, and it is also forbidden to install plastic windows in the central regions and historical buildings instead of classic wooden windows.

Most of all in the mysterious Prague, students were impressed by Prague Castle, which is considered one of the largest castles in the world. Its greatness is impressive, it will take at least an hour to go around the whole territory. Now it is not only the residence of the state, but also a cultural monument, which contains many historical relics.

Interesting fact: Prague Castle is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest castle in the world.

The tour of mysterious Prague did not end there, students visited the old city, admired the Old Town Hall and the main square there. Students also made a wish on the Charles Bridge and learned its centuries-old history.

Check out the photos our photographer took during the tour. Also do not forget about our , where you will find a lot of interesting information about the life abroad of our students.
